Admitted to the famous Mittenwald School of Lutherie (ex-RFA) in 1969 at the age of sixteen, Gilles Mercier received a rigorous education in the construction of the instruments of the string quartet.

This classical training was followed by long periods of assistance in different Parisian workshops, where he had occasion to work on the most prestigious of instruments.

Guitarist and violinist, he was also a professional bass player, while at the same time teaching double bass and harmony.

Over the years he has shared his knowledge with a number of younger craftsmen, some of whom have become well-know, award-winning guitar makers.

He was elected 'best craftsman in France' at the 21st compétition of this prestigious tri-annual award.

This experience, both in practice and in theory, has made of him a privileged source to many musicians.
